Until recently, hypnosis has been viewed as a technique applied only in mysterious surroundings, by conservatively dressed man of magic.
Conjuring up visions of old time magicians and their subjects controlled by their spells. ABRACADABRA!!!!
You expect these men to say things like “Look deep into my eyes, sleep, forget everything, YOU MUST OBEY ME” and we would be forced into mindless obedience like an automaton wanting to please its master.
Oh If it was only that easy!!
Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is not dramatic, nor is it remarkably different from other, more familiar states of mind. The magical, mysterious, or somewhat frightening images that the word hypnosis can conjure up are best dispelled by realizing that it’s a very natural process and state that all of us have experienced on our own without Magic, drama or giving up ones control.
Anyone who has day dreamed, enjoyed a page turner of a book, has been glued to a TV show, in love etc. is in a light trance state. I think I’m safe to assume here that you may have even enjoyed such a state.
So like the old saying goes if you can do it, so can everyone else.
The truth of the matter is that nobody can explain hypnotism completely. Hypnotic experiences vary widely from one another in accordance with differences in hypnotist's' styles and subjects' personalities. Each experience is unique, never reoccurring in exactly the same way twice.
Under hypnosis, a person's consciousness narrows, much as it does during a dream or trance. However hypnotized persons are different from sleeping persons because they can be active. They can walk about, talk, or write. Hypnotized persons may remain quiet, but usually they will do what the hypnotist suggests provided it’s not out of character for them.
So how does it all work for the most part you ask??
Even though we are all different we all have one thing in common and that is the way we go into hypnosis called the induction.
The induction is the process of focusing and enhancing concentration and imagination in such a way that the result is a heighten state of consciousness called hypnosis. The person must become so involved in this process that they direct their attention from the usual sources of orienting information, giving all their attention instead to the voice of the hypnotist.
That didn't sound too scary?? It's just like letting someone else drive the car so you can sight see.
Here is the take way!!
You must realize by now that one can learn to use hypnosis to change ones behaviours and to change the way one lives. We see that hypnosis can be amazingly effective and often is directly responsible for major changes in our lives but it must be stressed that it is not a magic pill or incantation that can resolve all problems.
As I write here, research is continuing and growing, and furthering the understanding of hypnosis and its effects. As we participate in each session and each persons experience are understood the closer we are to more concrete answers.
So go be part of this wonderful experience and contribute to its understanding and help demystify Hypnosis.
Don't be afraid to go see your friendly neigbourhood hypnotist and tell him/her I sent you.
